The ornate Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune) a former charitable almshouse founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Burgundy, as a hospital for the poor.
The original hospital building, one of the finest examples of fifteenth-century Burgundian architecture, is now a museum.
Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy in the Côte d'Or department in eastern France.
The annual wine auction in the historic Hospices is the primary wine auction of France.
