A salvaged gargoyle appears to lament the Abbey's demise.
The romantic ruins of Jumieges Abbey (Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Jumièges) on the River Seine west of Rouen. Founded by the Franks in 654 the Benedictine monastery survived for over a thousand years until finally closed down, along with all French monasteries, during the tumultuous Revolution of the 18th century.
