Kilometre post on the renamed D1916 or Voie Sacrée (Sacred Way) - the vital road that connected the French railhead at Bar-le-Duc to Verdun during the battle.
One of the costliest battles in military history, so bloody troops called it the 'Meat grinder' (Hachoir à viande).
Verdun exemplified the policy of a "war of attrition" pursued by both sides, which led to 300,000 dead and 500,000 wounded over the course of 11 grim months of 1916.
