Visitor lost amongst the 16,142 named French graves laid out around the Douaumont Ossuary at Verdun, the Ossuary itself contains the bones of over 130,000 unknown dead from both sides. - The city was the scene of one of the costliest battles in military history, so bloody troops called it the 'Meat grinder' (Hachoir à viande).
The battle in 1916 exemplified the policy of a "war of attrition" pursued by both sides, which led to 300,000 dead and 500,000 wounded over the course of 11 grim months.
