Mist surrounds the imposing ruins of Château Gaillard, perched high above the town of Les Andelys on the River Seine - Richard the Lionheart, King of England and Duke of Normandy, ordered the castle to be built at a strategic point overlooking the river in 1196 to protect the southern borders of his Dukedom from the French King.
