The 'Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme' near Albert in Picardy - It's walls of Portland stone are covered with the names of 72,337 British and Commonwealth servicemen who died in this infamous section of the Western Front during World War One but have no known grave. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the poignant memorial has been described as 'the greatest executed British work of monumental architecture of the twentieth century'.
