Napoleon III’s huge monument to Vercingetorix by Aimé Millet(1865) - Ancient Alesia in Burgundy, the site of the famous battle marking the defeat of the Gauls by the brilliant Roman general Julius Caesar in 52BC.
Caesar (being victorious) described the battle in detail in his Commentarii de Bello Gallico and the outcome determined the fate of all of Gaul, the Romans wining both the Gallic Wars and dominion over all of modern day France.
The Legion's incredible engineering achievements during the battle were truly impressive: in only six weeks, Caesar's legions enclosed the hill fort within a ring of fortifications 15 km (9.3 mi) long and then dug an additional ring 21 km (13 mi) long to stop reinforcements from reaching the now trapped Gauls.
